The title may mislead you into believing that this article is about females only. But as a firm believer of gender equality, I plan to include everyone in the category of sleeping beauties. Why in the first place am I calling all sleeping people beautiful? — because ‘Sleep’ itself is so beautiful. The idea of ‘Sleep’ enthuses us to complete our boring chores in this mundane world as quickly as possible and submit ourselves to this unknown domain where even we do not know who the ruler is? The true lovers of this nocturnal escapade do not even need the panacea of intoxicating drinks to lull themselves away from their ‘Thorns of life’. Therefore, this addiction to sleep, I mean our night sleep is very advantageous.
When we sleep, we enter our sub-conscious kingdom and it automatically opens from the Home Page of the website ‘www.Dream.Page.co.in’, the different folders of nightmares, gyrating sexy sirens, moments of exhilaration, anxious situations, rosy prospects, nature glimpses, conversations of love, perspiring job interviews, fruitless debates depending on what we were thinking about in our last few days. (my hypothesis)
Sometimes we are happy to comprehend that it was only a dream and nothing has changed when we wake up from a frightening dream. And most other times we are utterly frustrated that the things we had wanted in life from a lovely dress, latest car to a palatial house have been accomplished in the dream and as we are about to enjoy it …some villain (read Amrish Puri, if male, and Lalita Pawar if female) wakes us from our sleep. These ‘many a slip between the cup and the lip have been experienced by us so many times, when we have woken up to see the rosy world evaporate into the hard reality. And then we understand to our horror, that we are late for our office due to this immersion in dreams late into the morning. Then the eventual happens……. The boss in the real life gives us a hard time throughout the day for being late, and then this demon of a Boss returns back in the nightmare to give us perspiring nights. As mortals, we are caught in this parallel world where the incidents of the real world affect the happenings of the surreal world and as we are destined to go through the cycle of life and death; in the same way we are destined to go through this vicious cycle of nightmares and rosy dreams throughout our lifetime.
The psychologist , Freud may have said many things about dreams. But I have also done my original research on dreams, and it is still my ongoing Minor Research Project for which I am not going to get any marks in my API nor can I mention about it as personal research activity to NAAC . As an IQAC Coordinator , this NAAC too has been a recurrent theme of my dreams (mostly Nightmares). In my original research (no copy-paste business), I began with the hypothesis that I am able to decide, what I want to see, today in my dreams. The components of my experiment were my thoughts which I felt should be cycled again and again by which my sub-conscious would be subsumed by these thoughts only and then it will be compelled to play events related to it at night in my dreams. So I began by dwelling on any one topic, I wished to see in my dreams. But Alas! I concluded against my hypothesis, that I have no control over my own sub-conscious mind. The different CD’s are issued by the librarian there according to his/her wish and not our demand from the catalogue (so much so for the open access, which NAAC demands; they should surely get B), The librarian there is in total discord with our demands and we are compelled to see what we are dished out.
When we see dreams which we enjoy, how blissful our face looks, as if we are charioted in our sleep into a picture-perfect world where we don’t have to take any stress. But when we see nightmares, the same face is contorted with fears and anxieties. Some sleeping beauties have the habit of sleep-walking. Their mind is so much involved in their sub-conscious world that their limbs start getting the actual orders from the brain. Some people have recurring dreams. Some of us suffer from the habit of kicking in the air after seeing a recurring vision as we see in the movie ‘Chennai express’, Deepika Padukone kicking Shahrukh Khan in her sleep and at the same time looking very ferocious too .We have also seen in the movie Karz, late Rishi Kapoor hearing a particular tune and also seeing very chaotic and murderous images which lead him to the characters of his last birth which facilitates his revenge story . Then, I have met people who say that even if they wake up in between a dream, they can go back to the same dream, if they sleep again immediately. So, I think their sub-conscious mind has the facility of ‘bookmark’ and they can continue after the break, like we had interruptions during DD days and then happy continuance after we saw the boring blue board ‘Rukawat ke liye khed hain’
My other hypothesis on which I am still working and which has not been nullified like my earlier one is that if your stomach has some digestive disorder, then you are not able to enter the sound sleep zone, and like the mythical ‘Trishanku’ hanging between hell and heaven, you keep hanging in the sub-conscious zone, and are treated to a perennial visual stream of dreams every day. So, if you are able to free yourself of these digestive ailments, then you can enjoy sound sleep without the hindrance of visual and audio tracks spoiling your hard earned night sleep!
Then my third hypothesis which has been proved at least with me is that if we are under stress about something and if we are anxious about some meeting, interview, exams, result outcome then we will see the dreams turned into nightmares where we have missed a bus or a train or are late for an important appointment, exams or interview, have forgotten our pen for the exams or have lost our way. For this, the only remedy is to prepare ourselves for all these big days of our lives; so that the much needed confidence percolates in our conscious system and also into our sub-conscious system, so that the shutters of nightmares are closed in these overwrought days.
There are some sleeping beauties who remember what they have seen in their dreams and there are some who sadly remember that they have seen a dream but are unable to recollect the contents of their dreams. There are others I feel, who add some more masala to their already spicy dream and present it to us as a side dish for our breakfast , while some as I said, only rake their brains and deliver some tit-bits of what they could recollect from their dream ruins. This dream analysis on sleeping beauties has to be enriched further.
So this is my progress report till now on my ongoing MRP on dreams.
So as my research continues on the nature, control, quality and quantity of dreams, I will publish my final report as soon as I conclude. Till then…. sweet dreams!!!!!!
