A distressed girl falls in love with a Prince, who could find her, only if he could match her missing glass slippers. This girl became popular in the story written by Charles Perrault in 1697. The story of Cinderella, like all Disney movies has a happy ending. However how many of you know that writers have innovated dark versions of the story too where the step mother forces her daughters to cut off their toe in order to fit in the shoe? More horrific is the Vietnam version in which the protagonist Tam is found boiling her step-sister in front of her step –mother.
Recently I encountered a happy accident with the Zoom Studios web series IMPERFECT, a story about a girl obsessed with the original Cinderella syndrome. Isha, a simple girl (played by Samridhi Dewan , the same artist who played Kusum, a typical pre independence Bengali girl in Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Tyag’ on Epic, now this is called versatility!) with her candid, unornamented and penny plain love which is rejected by her Prince Charming who she is dating since many years. In spite of all her painstaking efforts to make the relationship work, her PC makes an ugly exit for a more fashionable and modern girl. Poor Cinderella, her emotional quotient being already shattered her dismissal from the job fans the flames. Unlike the Fairy Godmother, Isha is guided by an angelic Life Coach who keeps on shielding her with her modern day life skills. Also her confidants, Shalini and Raj, a very entertaining and good-humored pair guards her through her countless crisis. One extra point to this husband-wife duo for their endurance towards her, dosti ho to inke jaisi ho warna na ho!! On the top of that Isha Sanghvi, on important occasions is seen emotionally manipulated by her imaginary friend in ‘Black Jacket’, a bad ass.
The calling card of the series is undoubtedly the performances of the characters all perfectly fitted into their roles and justifying their responsibilities. It’s no force humour and slapstick scenes weaved in the whole fairy tale plot and fable setting predominate this new Romedy (Romance and Comedy) on the Zoom Studio Screen. So now this imperfect girl has a chance encounter with a handsome young boy who rescues her from further misadventures. I was delighted to watch her getting connected with him and finally coming out of her image of a pretty girl confused over matters of heart. Both fall for each other and their love story is an interesting watch. What is the destiny of their relationship? Will Isha go with her new boyfriend to Paris? Will everything workout as she has planned? I make a pause here! Because I am certain that the story is bound to take the viewers with more engaging episodes grounded in emotions and experiences. However the series makes us ponder on certain questions too. Does everything happen the way we plan our life? How will we know that people come in our life are to stay forever or have come only for a certain reason? Should we always rely on Plan A or should we be ready with Plan B and also Plan C in our lives? Indeed the lockdown has involuntary made us all to contemplate on these interrogations. It reminds me of the quote “It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question”, Eugene Ionesco.
